3. Pastor's greeting
Greetings. My name is Todd Riley. My wife, children and I
have been serving here with a great team of folks (Recently
we welcomed Stephen Spencer on staff as a worship and
youth pastor. We are grateful to God for him) for 16 years.
Over the years a number of people have asked me, "What is
your vision for Islington Baptist Church, what kind of
church do you want Islington to be?"
I want this church to be a place where people of all backgrounds feel comfortable and welcome.
I want this church to be a place where people of all ages feel included and cared for.
I want this church to be a place where people, regardless of their physical or mental abilities, can
come and involve themselves in the service of Christ.
I want this church to be a place where people of different theological persuasions- within the circle of
Evangelicalism- can come together, not focused upon their differences but upon the person of Jesus
Christ and the mission He has given us.
I want this church to be a place where those who want to be more formally attired can be, while
those who want to be more casual- within the bounds of Christian modesty- can be too.
I want this church to be a place where the needs of the different worshippers who come here are
met. For those who want contemporary music, I want them to be able to sing that just as much as I
want those who enjoy traditional music to be able to do the same. For those who are more emotive
and experiential I want them to be ministered to as well.
I want this church to be a place where our faith in Christ is built and where we are increasingly
equipped to live the Christian life.
I want this church to be a place where people are saved from their sins and where service in the
name of Jesus is done with zeal and passionate commitment.
I want this church to be a place where the creative talents and spiritual gifts of every person are
utilized for Christ.
I want this church to be all these things through Christ's power.
1. Islington Baptist Church exists to Worship- Learn- Tell- Serve
Everything we do is built around our purpose.
We are here to Worship God and lift up Christ
We are here to Learn more about who Jesus is and how to follow Him
We are here to Tell others of Christ and how through Him alone one can have the
forgiveness of sins and peace with God
We are here to Serve each other and our community
We believe that there is but one true God, being the God of the Bible, the creator of all that
is. He- though impossible for us to fully understand- exists as God the Father, God the Son,
and God the Holy Spirit.
We believe that God became a man, coming down from Heaven in the person of Jesus
Christ. Jesus came down to earth as the God-man for the express purpose of dying on a
cross as a once for all sacrifice for the sins of the whole world.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, that He communicates the presence of Christ to every
believer and that He helps every believer to become like Jesus.
We believe that Satan is a real being and that on this earth with him there are many other
fallen angels- each having the purpose of bringing harm to people and keeping them from
turning to God for the forgiveness of their sins.
We believe that all people- the young, the old, the unborn, the sick, and the disabled are
of incredible value and uniquely special amongst God's created order. We also believe that
all people are sinners- meaning that all are guilty of breaking God's laws. As long as a
person is apart from a relationship with Jesus, they are in the frightening position of being
an object of God's anger and in danger of Hell.
We believe that a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, resting solely upon ones having
asked Jesus to take away their sins and to be their Savior, constitutes the only way to
Heaven. In His great love, God continues to make this amazing offer available.
We believe that Heaven and Hell are real places.
We believe that Jesus will be soon returning to this earth to gather to himself his
followers and to judge all those who He finds in a state of rebellion against Him.
We believe in religious liberty. Every person has the right to practice and
spread their beliefs.
We believe that the Bible is the Word of God and that it is entirely free from error and that
the teachings of the Bible are incredibly relevant for our society today

2. Our History
Islington Baptist Church belongs to a group of churches called "The Fellowship of Evangelical
Baptist Churches in Canada." Within this association there are over 500 churches; each holding to
the same basic beliefs and practices.
Here's how we fit it:
In 1932 a small group of Christians decided to start a brand new church. After three and a half
years of meeting in a persons home, this group of believers stepped out in faith and built what is
now known as Islington Baptist Church.
Over the years, at least twelve full time pastors and their families have served here. Under their
leadership many have been brought to faith in Christ and equipped for the service of Christ.
Today, Islington Baptist church remains committed to carrying out what is called "The Great
Commission." This commissioning is found in Matthew 28:18-20, wherein Jesus says; "All authority
in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them
to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the
